Photon Medical

Context

Real-time clinical communication has almost no margin for ambiguity: a physician, assistant, or admin discussing, consulting, transferring, or managing a patient needs a system that's fast and unambiguous across iOS, Android, and mobile web, operating inside HIPAA compliance requirements on both the clinician-facing and patient-facing sides. Photon Medical's small team had the technical vision for that. It didn't yet have a design function, a design system, or established UX process to build the experience on.

Contribution

Sole designer on a cross-platform healthcare communication suite, owning the full product experience across iOS, Android, and mobile web and building the design system from scratch, working in direct collaboration with engineering from wireframes to production.

Designed both sides of a dual-sided platform: the clinician-facing tools for patient data access, secure messaging, and medical imaging sharing, and the patient-facing side of the same conversations. Established design practice where none existed: UX process, user research programs, and A/B testing, all operating inside HIPAA compliance requirements across both user populations.

Outcome

A design system and UX practice built from scratch to support a live cross-platform clinical communication product, with clinical workflows designed to hold up under HIPAA compliance and the accuracy demands of real-time patient care.
