I decided to search for Apex Colorado today (a ghost town, circa late 1800’s), but I don’t think I found it. This building was possibly near-ish to the original town, but I’m pretty sure I over-shot.
After realizing Apex wasn’t in the cards for the day, I decided to keep progressing down the already notably rugged path, instead of turning back. Fast forward 3 hours of 4×4 trail that I most certainly should not have been on by myself without a winch, patch kit, and onboard air, and I popped out in Idaho Springs.
Looking at the fire road maps, I was on a network of steady 6-9 (of 10) rated off-road trails for 2 solid hours, with pokey rocks the likes of which I’ve never seen. Needless to say, very impressed with my tires, and the extra 3” of clearance I got in Washington paid off when I only smashed my runners once the entire time.
My goal of heading to the mountains to get away from the smoke was pretty successful at least.
